ANNUAL DAY FUNCTION

On 19th July 2014, DSKE celebrated Annual Day and the event was made even more special as it was also the day of the annual Deepalaya Board Meeting. The board members, who’d come from all across India, got the rare opportunity to see their Deepalayans in all their glory.

The programme started in the evening with Mr. T.K. Mathew, Chief Executive of Deepalaya, and the Chief Guest of the evening, Mr. Ashok Sajanhar, along with the board of directors proceeding to light the lamp. Continuing the ceremony, Mr. Mathew spoke about the 35 year journey of the organization and thanked all the parents, sponsors, and board and staff members for being a part of the day. As is the custom at all our events, Mr. A.J.Philip took the stage to share a few anecdotes from his life about the importance of education.

The entire annual day was hosted by the students of DSKE and the theme chosen by them was ‘Life is Underprivileged students from Deepalaya school singing about 'Life is beautiful’. The comparers, a pair of boys and girls from the first DSKE senior secondary batch, did a marvelous job of injecting humour, drama and genuine emotion into each and every act. The easy camaraderie between them was visible for all to see.

The first act of the evening was a dance performance by the juniors on the popular Bollywood song – ‘Khwaja Mere Khwaja’. A host of other song and dance performances followed the opening act, each more entertaining than the last, however, the true highlight of the day was an art demonstration where two students from the middle school painted stunningly detailed portraits of Rabindranath Tagore and Jawaharlal Nehru in less than 5 minutes, while the canvas was upside down!

The stunning performance coerced a standing Children from slums who've achieved academic excellence take a photo with Deepalaya seniors ovation from the crowd who whistled and cheered the two artists as they stood next to their creations.

To round off the day’s proceedings – Awards, medals and certificates were given out to the children who performed admirably during the year 2013-2014. So great was the number of scholars at Deepalaya that the comparer would run out of breath calling out the names, but the number of children waiting for their medals just wouldn’t decrease.
