IT RAINED AWARDS AT DSKE
It was a bright sunny morning. After two days of continuous rain,
the sun broke through the black clouds in all its splendor. The staff and the
students were waiting for the stars who had helped the students in achieving
their dreams and stood by Deepalaya through all thick and thin. They were none
other than our donors, who had also eagerly awaited for the occasion to honour
the little champs, they had supported with different awards.
While some of the awards were given by donors themselves, some
were constituted by family members of the donors posthumously in their fond
memory. Some of the donors sponsored the education of a few children enrolled at
Deepalaya School Kalkaji Extension and took additional responsibility of
encouraging these children. There were
some who have announced scholarships for helping the poor and
meritorious students. The donors gave the freedom of giving the children what
they want for which they paid in cash. An amount of Rs. 74200/- was given by
different donors.
The auditorium, teachers, students and their parents braced
themselves for the Award distribution ceremony on 12th August. The programme
started with the lighting of lamp by Mr. T K Mathew, Mr. & Mrs. Bhaskar Sen,
one of our donors, Ms. Shikha Pal and Mrs. Meera Jacob.Thereafter Mr. T K Mathew
and Ms. Shikha Pal gave away the first lot of awards. This was followed by a tap
dance by girls, a group song by boys and duet by girls followed by a
scintillating Bhangra performance by boys and girls together.
Ms. Meera Jacob read out the annual report of the school to
inform the parents regarding last years' achievements and activities. Therafter
next lot of prizes were distributed. Mr. Mathew then apprised the parents about
importance of education and the changing scenario in the country. “Considering
the enactment of Right to Education Act, it has become difficult to reach to the
actual poor. The organization is constrained to enroll students from better-off
families, who can pay the actual amount of fee to meet the stipulated salaries
under the act and day-to-day running cost of the school,” he said. Mr. Mathew
then thanked the parents and teachers to make the school a huge success and
congratulated the students who were able to make a mark and win awards.
A total of 91 prizes were distributed to students from all
classes, including the pre-primary wing for academic performance, participation
in sports and co-curricular activities. It was lovely to see the tiny tots walk
on the stage holding their prizes. There were many students who were able to
grab more than 2 prizes with Aman Kukreti winning 5 prizes. On the whole, the
day would be remembered fondly by the students, teachers and our donors.
Long Live Deepalaya
It
was a day which was long awaited, a day yearned for by everyone
forming part of Deepalaya Parivar.
Of all the days, one day that is special is the Deepalaya
foundation day. It is a day when everyone pays their obeisance to
the special 7 who came together with their hard-earned money of Rs.
2500/- and united for a cause that would one day evolve into a
people’s organization. 36 years on, Deepalaya – the abode of light
-- is growing and glowing every day with a never-say-die spirit of
serving the community.
It was time to celebrate 16th July
-- the day when Deepalaya
was born 36 years ago -- a day when everyone came together under
one roof at Deepalaya School Kalkaji Extension to share their
experiences, to shake a leg and sing together.
The occasion was graced by two founding members -- Mr. T K Mathew
and Mr. T M Abraham and started with a solo song from Deepalaya
Learning Centre Sanjay Colony. It was followed by a welcome speech
with Mr. P T Varghese, Director (Admin) and a graceful dance by
Ms. Shamli on the evergreen number – abhi
na jao chhor ke ki dil abhi bhara nhi.
Thereafter, Mr. T K Mathew informed the audience how this small
plant grew over these years and is marching towards self-reliance
gradually. “The un-satiated desire to serve people is the only
factor which has kept the organization moving and binds us
together even now, when some of our founding members are no longer
with us,” said Mr. Mathew.
It was time to begin the celebrations. No one had ever imagined
that we have a huge group of talented people, who can sing such
melodious songs, dance to a variety of Bollywood, traditional and
cultural songs, enact the social evils prevalent in society.
One by one, everyone came upstage to participate and exhibit their
talent.
Though each and every performance had an elegance of its own, one
that grabbed all the limelight was put up by SHG team from Tavru
on a Bhojpuri song. It was amazing to see women dancing in jeans
and t-shirts, dragging Mr. Mathew and Mr. Abraham to the dance
floor, who thoroughly enjoyed the occasion. There were others who
followed suit and shook a leg together.
Three-hour long function came to an end with a dance
performance from Deepalaya School Kalkaji Extension followed by
National Anthem and a sumptuous lunch. Mr. Mathew and Mr. Abraham
planted a sapling each to mark the occasion. The day passed by,
but is still alive in our hearts, with fond memories to relish for
days together.

Deepalayans prove their mettle in Netball
This May, Deepalaya School Kalkaji Extension had the pleasure of
playing host to the second edition of the One Nation

behind this event is to eliminate superficial gender barriers and promote the
intriguing concept of mixed gender teams in sporting competitions.
This years ONNC was supported by the NAZ Foundation and the Net
Ball Trust, while the T-shirts and jerseys of the participating teams were
sponsored by T-10 sports. Care was taken to ensure that medical personnel were
present on-site in case of any emergency – Seva provided two MBBS doctors for
the duration of the tournament
The championship was held over two days and saw the participation
of ten teams from four different states – Two teams from West Bengal (Kolkata),
three from Maharashtra, one from J&K and four from Delhi. The tournament
officially commenced on a crisp Saturday
morning with an opening ceremony, which was followed by all the team captains
taking an oath to play fair and uphold sportsman spirit
The teams were divided into different pools and through a set of
grueling matches, four finally made it to the top of the ladder – Forebel (J&K),

spot in the searing heat. In welcome turn of events, Deepalaya managed a two

4:30 PM by International Education Consultant Ms.Margaret Warner. Teachers were
enabled to identify the Intelligences - Linguistic, Logical, Spatial, Musical,
Kinesthetic, Naturalistic, Interpersonal, Intrapersonal, In students to make the
teaching learning process a more efficient and fruitful one. The highlight of
the workshop was the different group activities through which the teachers
displayed the "Multiple Intelligence based teaching, A reality" to execute in
the classes.
CURRICULUM AND PRACTICES -AN INSIGHT
A workshop was held on curriculum practices for the primary teachers in
the month of March by Mrs. Jayalaxmi. The workshop began with insightful
thoughts on what is a curriculum basically, how do we frame a curriculum and how
our curriculum needs to be sensitized according to the needs of the child. The
framing of a curriculum needs to be
done in stages; starting with selecting our aim,
learning experiences, content, integration and evaluation. The teaching
learning process is an ongoing process. A teacher always has to innovate
in class methodologies to make teaching more effective and efficient. The
workshop also enlightened on adopting various interesting tools like building a
story by just seeing the pictures. It showed the interdependence of curriculum
components. Then a small activity was
conducted wherein few teachers had to introduce themselves with an
adjective starting with the first alphabet of their names. The rest of
the teachers were then asked to recall the introductions. This activity stressed
on, how a child also has to grasp so much of information at one go and it is
difficult to reproduce it all. The workshop attenuated the fact how effectively
we can teach if we observe, frame and evaluate our curriculum from time to time.
Assessment is a very important aspect of teaching learning process. The child's
formative stage should be utilized to make all the
fundamentals clear and be given the right focus.
The workshop emphasized on working together as a team, seek knowledge
around. We should not have blinkers and move in one direction but open our minds
to various possibilities of gathering knowledge from wherever possible. Use of
teaching methods was encouraged and there should be a
proper planning, monitoring and feedback to use
the aids. The workshop indeed helped us to open up with our ideologies,
how teaching should be made more fun and interesting and how we need to assess
the skills learnt by the student at the end. The workshop marked its closure
with a beautiful observation made by Mrs. Jayalaxmi at
Rashtrapati bhavan on Education and the Seven
P's : Excellence, Empathy, Efficiency, Ethics, Environment and Equity. We
sincerely thank Mrs Jayalaxmi for enlightening our minds with such a thought
provoking and enriching workshop.
INTEGRATION OF ICT IN TEACHING -LEARNING
A workshop was held on integration of ICT in Teaching and learning
in the month of May by Mr. Asad Ishaque.
Knowing and using ICTs is important in today’s fast changing knowledge society.
The use of ICT in education gains particular importance in the present global
world with the increasing demand for education for all and the inability of the
existing structures to meet such demands. ICTs can empower teachers and
learners, making significant contributions to learning and achievement.
Learning Objectives:
• To understand what
the term ‘Educational Technology’ stands for and its relevance in the classroom.
• To develop integrated ICT lesson plans
• To use Educational Technology tools in the classroom in all curriculum areas.
• To use Educational Technology to teach higher order thinking skills-raising
the bar for the learner.
Maths and Science Workshop
FICA had conducted a workshop for Maths and Science teachers in school. It was
very good, as teachers got an idea how to innovate their method of teaching the
subject Maths and Science through art and craft. Young children like to work
with colors. The workshop has taught how to look beyond the text books and use
different method to teach the subject so that children would take interest in
learning. The best thing about the workshop was that the activity shown was
engaging and interesting if teachers introduce such activity in class children
will take active interest and hence they will learn by doing. When teachers
teach the students verbally the concept of Maths is very abstract, especially
for children who are in primary classes they may fail to understand the concept.
But if teachers provide children with concept materials, the understanding of
the concept becomes easier and therefore children have the opportunity to
explore and come up with new ideas.
The new academic session 2014-15 will
commence from April
1, 2014.
