Period - April - December
Deepalaya started on July 16, 1979, with five children, two teachers and an investment of Rupees 17,500/- by the seven founding members. Pre-school education was the beginning then. The Founding Members of Deepalaya were Mrs. Grace Thomas, Mr. C.M. Mathai, Mr. Punnoose Thomas, Mr. T.K. Mathew, Mr. Y. Chackochan, Mr. T.M. Abraham & Mr. P.J. Thomas.
Some of the Founder Members are still steering the path for the organization and working very hard to take it to the new horizons. Deepalaya has come a long way from a humble beginning in three + decades.
Deepalaya School Kalkaji Extension is an unaided, recognized co-educational, senior secondary school affiliated to the CBSE. It has been in existence for over 17 years but it got recognition from the Directorate of Education in October, 2008 and affiliation from the CBSE in October, 2009. The school got Minority Status in August, 2011. The school was upgraded to the Senior Secondary level in Arts & Commerce stream in August, 2013. We started Class XI – Commerce stream in September, 2013.

The Vision of the school is to help create a society based on legitimate rights, equity, justice, liberty, honesty, social awareness and a culture of service in which all are self - reliant.
MISSION
Our Mission is to cultivate in young minds intellectual pursuit, productive and responsible for nation building with excellence, harmony and self-discipline.The parent body of the school, Deepalaya is the longest operating NGO in Delhi.
ACADEMICS
During these months, more focus was given on developing the reading, writing, vocabulary and communicative skills of the students. The teachers used TLM extensively and effectively. The students were trained to class worksheets and wrote their Formative Assessments and Summative Assessment. Students were regularly borrowed and read books from the library. Remedial classes for weak children have been made compulsory.
ENGLISH CONVERSATION
Emphasis is laid on English Conversation, reading, comprehension and writing skills. Two new words are taught to the students every day to increase their vocabulary. Teaching Learning Materials (TLM) such as CDs and Audio & Video aids are used specially in the junior classes to teach the children PHONETICS and voice modulation regarding reading, poetry recitation etc.
VALUE EDUCATION
Short stories with a moral are narrated in class, sometimes enacted also. Students do various activities in the morning assembly related to moral values. Teachers take up classes and day to day experiences to inculcate moral values.
COMPETITIONS
To give a level play field and to bring out the best in every child, inter class competitions are held weekly in all the classes. The winners are awarded certificates.
INFRASTRUCTURE
DSKE can boast of a very sound infrastructure. Our campus is spread in 2 acres. It has well equipped Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Maths Lab. and Computer Labs, Library, Art Room, music room, dance room, medical room, an auditorium with a seating capacity of 400 and well lit and airy classrooms. New curtains were purchased for the class rooms. A new PA has been installed in the auditorium. There is provision for a school canteen for students and teachers. There is also increased provision of clean and cold drinking water for children.

INTER-HOUSE COMPETITION (QUIZ)
The Inter-house Quiz Competition for 2016 of Deepalaya School was conducted on 22/04/2016. It was of a very high standards.
The Quiz Mistress for the occasion was Ms.Divya Alex. The event was categorized under three levels the Primary, Middle and Secondary. There were four rounds for the competition; Rapid fire, Buzzer, Audio Visual and Bonus Round. Different set of question were asked in each round.

BIBLE PLAY
On 29th April 2016 ‘Bible Enacting’ Competition was held in DSKE auditorium. Students of the Middle School performed during the 2nd and 3rd period. Judges for the same were Mr. Trevor Jacob and Mr. Sunny Verghese. The audience was from classes VI to VIII. The Primary school performed during the 6th and 7th period. Judges for the same were Ms. Reeba and Mr. Sunny Verghese. The audience was from classes I to V.

PATRIOTIC SONG COMPETITION
The Inter-House Patriotic song competition was held on 10/08/16 for the Junior School, on the 11/8/16 for the Middle School and on 12/8/16 for the Senior school . Eight students for solo singing, eight students for duet and fifteen students for group singing participated in each category.
For the first time two categories in solo and duet singing were introduced and in all sections we had sixteen items presented four each from the four houses.
Independence day was celebrated in DSKE on 12th August. Mr A.J.Philip Chairman of DSKE was the chief guest. There were two speeches rendered in English and Hindi by the Head Girl Farah Khan and Himani. Patriotic dances were presented. Sweets were distributed to all the students and staff on 12/08/16. The senior level Patriotic level competition was also conducted during the program. The competitions were of a good standard and the judges had a tough time in deciding the winners.

DEBATE COMPETITION 2016
Deepalaya School has set the benchmark for conducting activities in such a way that the students not only enjoy but also learn a great deal from it. With the same perspective in view, the school organised an Inter-House debate competition for the students of classes IX to XII on 13th October, 2016 at 8.30 am in the School Auditorium. The topic of the debate was- ‘Is India on the right way dealing with terrorism’. The representatives of the various houses spoke vehemently on the issue and came up with their perspective regarding the same. They cited reasons and supported them with suitable examples from the latest developments in the country, to justify their stand. The judges for the day, Mrs. Reeba Ninan Miriam and Mrs Meera Jacob were deeply engrossed in the ideas of the students. They adjudged the Amartya Sen house as first and C V Raman house as second. Ankit Chauhan of Class XII Commerce and Himani of Class IX C were selected as best debators. The students of classes IX and XI, who were an audience to the show, thoroughly enjoyed the event.

On the 3rd December 2016 there was an Inter-House Salad Making Competition. Each house had 4 participants guided by one house teacher. It was a wonderful display. The raw materials used were fruits, vegetables, nuts, cheese and curd. Mrs. Meera Jacob and Mrs. Reeba were the judges.

ELOCUTION COMPETITION
Elocution refers to one’s capacity of communicating with others, with the use of exact speech and gestures. It helps children to speak exceptionally well in school and other places with confidence. It enables one to recite the poems with correct diction, clarity and good pronunciation. To improve this the inter- class English elocution competition for classes I to VIII was held on Friday, August26th and Monday, August 29th, 2016. The preliminary round was conducted in the class room and two children from each of the twenty one sections were selected for the final round. There were forty two participants for the final round.
The judges for the competition were Ms Rituparna Das, Ms. Baishali Bhattacharya and Ms. Shalini for classes I to V and Mr. Trevor Jacob the Principal, Ms. Rituparna Das and Ms. Divya Alex for classes VI to VIII. The competition gave a lot of encouragement and confidence to the speakers and all present there .The event was culminated with a few words of encouragement by the Principal followed by the results.

SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
INVESTITURE CEREMONY
“Leaders are not born but are made by their experience in the life.” To inculcate the leadership qualities in students and to give them a feel of the administrative body, a school council was formed at DSKE and the investiture ceremony was held on 25-4-2016 at 11:45 am in the school auditorium.
Mr. Sakhi John, former manager of DSKE and a board member was the chief guest of the function. The function was presided over by Mr. T. A. Abraham, the manager DSKE. The students of classes IX, X, XI & XII , teaching and non-teaching staff and parents graced the occasion. The programme commenced with a hymn by the students under the guidance of Mr. Sunny .C. George, the choir master.

Ms. Meera Jacob recited the introductory prayer followed by the welcome address by Mr. Trevor Jacob, the Principal.
The programme started with the scripture reading from the four holy books – Bible, Quran, Gita and Guru Granth Sahib. The newly elected student council marched to the stage in unison and Ms. Reeba Ninan Thriam, the Junior School Incharge introduced the council & the audience.
The Principal administered the oath to the newly elected leaders. They took an oath in front of the whole school to be true to their posts and duties assigned to them.

The Chief Guest gave the badges to the leaders and presented the sashes. The manager handed over the different flags to the leaders.
In his address, the chief guest appreciated the efforts by the school for providing opportunities to the students and take part in activities like these. He said,”DSKE is now at par with the other leading schools in and around the city.” He wished well to all the members of the Student Council.
The Principal thanked the chief guest and other guests. The ceremony was concluded with the National Anthem. The ceremony was held with lots of enthusiasm and gusto and it was indeed a memorable day for DSKE.

Earth Day Celebration
Deepalaya School Kalkaji Extn. celebrated Earth Day 2016 on 26/4/16. Poster making and slogan writing competitions were held in the school. Students of classes IX and X participated in the competitions. Pranati Bhattacharjee and Manjusha Mathews were the teacher incharge.
Sarika Tiwari of class IX D was adjudged as best in poster making and Grace.M.Reji was adjudged as best in slogan writing competition.
VAN MAHATSAV
Deepalaya School Kalkaji Extn. celebrated ' Van mahatsab ' on 6/8/2016. M.L.A Avtar Singh of kalkaji was the chief guist of the occassion. Members of eco-club and Bharat Scouts and Guides of Deepalaya School kalkaji Extn. planted saplings. Principal Mr Trevor Jacob, Vice Principal Ms Meera Jacob and Reeba Ma'am were also present for Van Mahatsav.
Muskan Rathore and Priyadarshi Anand of class IX E spoke about importance of Van Mahatsav.
INTERACT CLUB
The Interact Club was inaugurated on 22nd August, 2016. Various dignitaries from the Rotary Club came to attend the inauguration. They addressed the students and appreciated the work of the Interact Club.
The new office bearers for the year 2016-17 were elected in this meeting. They also took an oath that they would work for the betterment of the school and the society.
PEACE WALK
A Peace Walk was held on 1-9-2016 in Govindpuri, Transit Camp and Kalkaji Extension, Pocket -14. 40 students and 10 teachers participated in the walk. Various posters were also prepared to create awareness among the people. Posters conveyed the message of ceasing the war and spreading peace and happiness around the world.

Teacher’s Day at Deepalaya School, Kalkaji Extn was celebrated on 5th September with full zeal and enthusiasm. The day started with giving a tribute to Dr. Saravpalli Radhakrishnan. The day had an emotional and recreational touch. Students always look forward to Teachers’ Day with a lot of anticipation, for the sheer spirit of the occasion. Acting as teachers, they get a fair idea of the responsibility, so efficiently handled by their teachers. It requires a lot of hard work and dedication to be a good teacher and earn the affection of students at the same time.
The entire programme of the day was planned, organized and executed by the students of classes XI and XII.In the morning the students came dressed up as teachers and went to all the classes. Cultural programmes began at 11.30 am with by invoking the blessings of God. The series of events involved dances, speeches and melodious singing . They were touched by the warm gesture made by all the students of the school as they made each teacher feel special on this day. The school Principal, Mr. Trevor Jacob awakened the teachers with his thought provoking message. He distributed cards and gifts to the teachers. The programme ended at 1.00 pm followed by sumptuous lunch. The students were given healthy snacks. It was truly a memorable day for the teachers and all the students
‘SAY NO TO CRACKERS’ RALLY
The students of class XI & XII of Deepalaya School went for a rally in Govindpuri and Transit Camp. 20 students and 2 teachers participated in this rally which made the people aware for saying ‘No to Crackers’ through these following slogans-
“Diwali hai deepo ka tyohar
Math karo isse patoko se bekar.”
“Jab ho sakta hai deepo se ujala
Toh kyo le patako ka sahara”
The rally was successfully conveyed the message to the community.

ANNUAL DAY FUNCTION
It was a day to celebrate and remember the achievements of the past and look forward to the journey ahead. Deepalaya School, Kalkaji Extension celebrated its Annual Day on 21st of October, 2016. The event kicked off with the senior students presenting a groovy welcome followed by an elegant prayer dance and the lightening of the lamp by our eminent guests. The Chief Guest for the event was Ms. Reva Nayyar (former secretary, Ministry of Women and Child Development and Director, Essel foundation). She is also the chairperson of Bal Sahyog. The event was also honoured by the presence of our Chairman, Mr. A.J. Philip Board member Mr. Sakhi John and other dignitaries.
The welcome address was given by the principal, Mr. Trevor Jacob who also
presented the annual report for the year 2015-16. Award Distribution Ceremony
was held to acknowledge the achievements of class 10th and 12th students of the
batch 2015-16. The chief guest addressed the gathering with her inspiring words
and gave an uplifting message on education.
The Vote of thanks was presented by Ms. Meera
Jacob. The event culminated at a cheerful note.
EDUCATIONAL STUDY TOUR
The India Trade Promotional Organization (IITPO) had launched the 36th edition of the mega event, India International Trade Fair (IITE). The Fair was held from November 14-27, at Delhi Pragati Maidan.
The students of classes XI and XII visited the IITF on 24th November, 2016. The teachers Ms. Meera Jacob and Mr. RajKishore Aggarwal accompanied the students.
The visit was a part of the students’ curriculum. They were expected to spend time at different state and international venues and based on their interaction and observance make a report. The students analyzed Trade Promotion Techniques. They could understand the psychology of buying and differentiating the needs and attractions in the buying process. The visit to the Trade Fair was an enlightening experience for all the students in terms of team work and coordination. The students also got a chance to witness the diverse culture of different states in India and also of the other represented countries present there.

The inauguration of the sale of the first raffle booklet was done on 6th December 2016 by Mr A. J. Philip, Chairman of DSKE. The Lucky Draw will be held on the 29th January, 2017.

A workshop on ‘good touch’ and ‘bad touch’ was conducted for the students of classes VI to VIII by the Police Officers of Govindpuri police station. They showed a movie on sexual harassment and also introduced a helpline for the children to get in touch with them for further advice.
2. Name of the event - Farewell Class XII 2016-17
Date of the event - 28th February 2017
Venue - DSKE auditorium
It was an incredible day hosted and organized by class XI students, to bid farewell for class XII students.
The programme started at 11:30am with prayer and scripture readings. Prof. John Varghese, Principal of St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, the chief guest of the day advised the students to be their own master while making important decisions. He appreciated Deepalaya for their selfless effort in bringing quality education to the marginalised sections of the society. Mr. J. Veeranaghavan, former Union Education Secretary exhorted the students to do well to serve the society. Rev. Father Suresh Mathew, Editor Indian Currents blessed the students and told students to be good human beings. Aparna Shrivastava of Tech Mahindra Foundation gave a talk on job careers available in the health sector for those who did the 12th class.
A.J. Philip, the Chairman of the school and CEO of Deepalaya expressed his desire that the outgoing students did something for the less fortunate brethren when they established themselves in life.
Mr. Trevor Jacob, the Principal said that this batch would do well in the board exams. All the board members were present on the occasion. The colourful programmes put up by class XI students ended with National Anthem and sumptuous lunch.
New Developments
Academics -Remedial for weak children have been made compulsory.
New curtains were purchased for the class rooms.
· A new PA has been installed in the auditorium.
· There is provision for a school canteen for students and teachers.
· There is also increased provision of clean and cold drinking water for children.
